Detroit. Paradise Valley. A city alive with music, ambition, money, and secrets.
At 549 Adams, the Blue Garden is the kind of nightclub where everyone eventually passes through the door-musicians and gamblers, businessmen and policemen, politicians and men whose influence is harder to define. Behind the bar, Ike Mercer has learned that survival depends less on knowing everything than on knowing when to listen. Set against the real streets, personalities, politics, crime, and racial tensions of Depression-era and wartime Detroit, The Blue Garden blends historical fiction with noir mystery to explore a vanished neighborhood and the people who made their lives within it.
Drawing fictional characters into the orbit of actual people and events, The Blue Garden recreates a Detroit that existed in the shadows between the newspaper headlines. It is a story of loyalty, power, friendship, and uncertainty-and of one nightclub standing at the center of a changing city. From M. R. Scally, The Blue Garden invites the reader through the door at 549 Adams, where the music is playing, the drinks are pouring, and everyone seems to know something they aren’t saying.
