The camera is a vital component of the smartphone and its utility is indispensable. The design of the smartphone camera system and image processing capabilities determine the quality of the captured photos and videos. This book discusses the key topics related to smartphone camera technology, including the system components (e.g., color filter array, CMOS and CCD image sensors, camera lens structure and material) and image signal processor architecture. Key optical system concepts will be reviewed, as well as camera parameters such as sensor size, pixel pitch, Airy disk, Nyquist frequency, and modulation transfer function. Various impairments (e.g., camera and image noise sources, optical distortions) are described, and techniques to overcome theses issues (e.g., image correction and enhancement) are discussed. The final chapter of the book focuses on advanced smartphone camera features, including the use of AI in image processing.
