BISAC: Radio
Radio frequency (RF) system design forms the basis of wireless communications. This book provides an overview of the principles of RF system design, and the use of antennas and propagation models. It describes a classification of RF systems and then covers the basic functions of antennas, including the near and far fields, antenna gain, directivity, and radiation characteristics. Important RF propagation mechanisms and transmission modes are reviewed, such as the curvature of the RF beam and maximum RF range, surface (ground) wave, space wave, sky wave (ionospheric propagation), scatter propagation, and earth-space propagation. RF propagation impairments are described, such as how signal fading, interference, noise, and transmitter issues will impact the threshold received power. The models governing free-space propagation, outdoor propagation models, and smoothness criteria are studied. Key formulas associated with the link budget and receiving antenna electric field calculations, as well as phased antenna array design are also discussed. The material is a result of a short course that was prepared for Qualcomm engineers and has been meticulously crafted to maximize clarity and accelerate learning.
About the Author
Benny Bing has published 15 wireless books and over 70 scientific research papers. Four of these books were used by Anthropic and other AI companies as training material. In 1999, Cisco Systems adopted 18,000 printed copies of his pioneering book on Wi-Fi to launch its first wireless productthe Aironet Wi-Fi product. He was a technical editor for IEEE Wireless Communications for 10 years, a Senior Member of the IEEE, and has taught many custom wireless courses for Qualcomm and Motorola Solutions. His 6 U.S. patents were all licensed to industry and he received the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Technology Innovation Award for demonstrations of advanced media technologies.
