This is no cozy mystery!
Murder and Brownies: Expect Anything – Book One is absurd, horrifying, funny, and filled with bizarre characters. But this is definitely not your typical cozy mystery.
Pepper Griffin wants nothing more than to be a biological mother, but people in town are determined to destroy that dream. She doesn’t realize how many people are working against her. And it has nothing to do with the fact that, at 5 feet 1, she has the feet of a huntsman and the hands of a boxer.
Pepper wants to become a mother again after a painful loss, even if she is still in denial about how badly she wants it. Tuppie is another weird character who simply wants to fit into the neighborhood as a new resident. Granny is an octogenarian bodybuilder and free spirit who wants to protect the small guy, so to speak. At 6 feet 4 and 220 pounds, everybody else is the small guy.
These strong women live in a small town named Sparse, Massachusetts, where horror has a sense of humor. It is home to Lake Boiling Hand, The Busted Goat, and the most bizarre killers in the world.
Sparse is a surreal place filled with absurd characters and creepy creations that nevertheless come alive in the story. You see, human beings are not clichs. In Sparse, a girl who looks like she can eat anything might paint her nails while a thin girl devours everything in sight.
This story embraces macabre humor, psychological horror, dark comedy, and the ridiculous.
There are supernatural elements in Sparse, too. There are twins who are ugly and quiet but become saviors. There are skunks and dead fish everywhere. And just about everybody lives in a tiny house.
There is an angel. There is grief. There is betrayal and there are sinister thoughts, a Ouija board, dead bodies, unreal surprises, and enough macabre absurdity to make Sparse feel almost normal.
There are even relatable characters to smile about. These characters are as multi-dimensional as a good cat.
But one of them is waiting for the perfect moment to let her claws out. Whether Pepper becomes her partner in this exercise in evil or her target will remain a secret at first.
And poor, innocent Pepper will have to pick up the pieces.
Expect anything.
