Work in the modern world exists in a context dominated by the power of finance, which often leads to work being exploitative and over-demanding, precarious, or unsatisfying. The book introduces readers to the extensive material concerning work in the Bible, some of it viewing work positively as the will of God for humanity, some of it negatively as violent and exploitative. It concludes with the Sabbath rest as the expression of God’s gracious will for his people as well as the opportunity to adore God in God’s works. It uses this material to open up a critical dialogue with the modern context and to challenge readers to reflection and action.
