Combat Camera (eBook)

Description

Youd like to believe youre in some tale of sin and redemption. I guess we all like to think were walking through some grand, redemptive story. Well, were all going to end up disappointed. Disappointment is one of the two fates that we all must eventually meet. When former Pulitzer Prizewinning combat photographer Lucas Zane washes up drunk, broken, and hallucinatory after covering the worst global conflagrations of the past two decades, he takes a job with a low-budget pornographic impresario, getting accidentally involved with one of his actresses, Melissa. After a horrific assault, Zane hatches a plan to rescue Melissa, his career, and, he hopes, himself.Combat Camerais a restless, tragic, blackly funny, hypnotic novel.Somerset is a confident, gifted writer, which explains why Combat Camera has already won the Metcalf-Rooke Award. Somerset is able to seamlessly switch between dialogue and Zanes internal monologue as he darts between grim horror and grim comedy. He also avoids the arid claustrophobia endemic to novels where much of the action takes place within the main characters mind.Toronto StarWritten by A.J. Somerset,Camerabrings characters alive, brings their problems into focus and makes them relatable. The people that populate the story seem to ooze personality and Somersets ability to describe what is happening gives a sense of reality to his words.GauntletCombat Camerais rough and raw and unapologetic. And, consequently, extremely refreshing.Mark Sampson,Free Range Reading
