BISAC: Science Fiction – Alien Contact
He has told himself all day that this is just another search. Another stupid, desperate sweep through the woods where his father was last known to have gone before he disappeared. Another night of finding nothing but old leaves, mud on his sneakers, and that familiar hollow ache in his chest.
But the rumor from town keeps circling back: strange lights over the forest. A black vehicle seen near the old access road. Sounds no one can explain.
Rumors are usually useless. Jack has learned that. Rumors are what people offer when they do not have answers and do not know how to sit quietly with someone else’s loss.
Still, he ducks beneath the lowest branches and enters the forest.
The quiet closes around him at once.
