BISAC: Short Stories (single author)
The sea settles onto the body like a dress, until the envy in the eyes around it turns to shame. A wish is bought for half a life. A door has stayed half-open for years – long enough that even the feet have forgotten the wall came down.
“Dream Got Lost, Hope Stayed (And What Never Came Back)” is a collection of thirty short stories by Mehran Rameshjan – a bilingual writer who writes each story first in Persian, then recreates it himself in English.
The collection moves in six unfolding currents: a dream forms, a wish is bought and lost, departure begins, what remains of the self comes apart, a threshold arrives, and last, what never came back.
Nothing here resolves easily. Hope, wherever it appears, does not fix anything – it simply stays, the way a hand stays pressed to cold glass long after the one on the other side of it is gone.
If you’re drawn to contemporary Persian literature, literary short fiction, stories of exile and immigration, or spare, surreal prose, this collection is for you.
